Retreat Behavioral Health to Host Behind the Badge: A Candid Discussion about Mental Health in Law Enforcement During National Police Week

Members of law enforcement to have an honest and open conversation about the mental health challenges of the field

NEW HAVEN, CT— So many of us are struggling with taking care of our mental health during these challenging times and police officers are not immune. According to the Ruderman Family Foundation, police officers are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty. And according to Blue H.E.L.P., 56 active duty police officers have died by suicide just this year. With these staggering statistics, Retreat Behavioral Health wants to help raise awareness about the issue during National Police Week.

On Thursday, May 13 at 7 p.m., Retreat will host Behind the Badge: A Candid Discussion about Mental Health in Law Enforcement on Facebook Live. This event will feature current and former members of law enforcement taking part in an open and honest conversation about the mental health challenges of the field.

“There is a pervasive stigma that makes it challenging for members of law enforcement to ask for help when it comes to their mental health. But that stigma is proving to be devastating for those who are suffering in silence,” said Peter Schorr, CEO and Founder of Retreat Behavioral Health. “We want to make sure that we are creating an open forum for those who wear the badge to talk about the struggles they face and provide information on how to get help.”

The live discussion will feature retired NYPD Police Officer and mental health advocate Frank Sambataro; retired New Haven Police Officer Shafiq Abdussabor; and Sergeant Shayna Kendall, Deputy Commander of Training at the New Haven Police Academy. Retreat at South Connecticut clinical supervisor Ryan Guteral, LPC, will serve as moderator.
